CLUB SENDS LIFESAVING ASSISTANCE TO DISASTER HIT AREAS

Thanks to the dedication of Rotary members from the Loch Ness and Inverness Culloden clubs, vital relief supplies are heading to Samoa, the Philippines and American Samoa following the tsunami and earthquake.

Water Survival Box, Shelterbox and Aquabox, are rushing to the scenes to offer help. Already there is a Shelterbox team on site in the Philippines helping provide homes for families who are affected.

The disasters have destroyed villages, leaving hundreds of people in chaos and worrying for missing loved ones. Water Survival Box, Shelterbox and Aquabox will provide much needed temporary homes and clean water during this terrible time. They contain water purification kits, tents and other equipment for hygiene. Research is ongoing to improve the contents of the boxes, further helping those in need.

Speaking about the commitment being made, Mike Halley, President of the Loch Ness Club and Shelterbox Coordinator in the North of Scotland said, “We have all obviously been moved by the images on television of the people losing their homes and possessions as a result of the tsunami.

“Shelterbox literally offers them a lifeline by giving families a ‘roof over their head’. And whilst there is no way the tent can offer them a replacement for their lost homes, it offers a bit of stability for families by giving them the basic essentials they will need to live on, but most importantly allows families of up to 10 people to stay together during a time where they are going need each other very much.

Mike Halley concluded, “I know that a number of clubs over the North of Scotland have joined Loch Ness and Culloden to commit to the Rotary Shelterbox appeal that is currently ongoing at the moment. We are obviously delighted that we have been able to help out in some small way to help those that have recently been devastated by this disaster.”

These recognised projects are supported by Rotary members up and down the UK and Ireland who raise funds through various activities to help provide humanitarian aid where needed. Anything from school activities to public donations are poured into the initiatives with the aim of saving lives.
