CHARLESTON CHEF HEADS TO NATIONAL ROTARY COOKING FINALSInverness schools urged to help eradicate polioVictorious WarriorsCLUB SENDS LIFESAVING ASSISTANCE TO DISASTER HIT AREASJudy Westwater Brings Good NewsIndex Health Screeningby Caroline Dobson - 13:45 on 24 February 2010
On February 17th Dr Rob Henderson, Consultant Public Medicine, Highland Health Board, spoke to the Club about the new bowel screening programme of which he is Area Co-ordinator.
Extensive pilot trials have shown that the death rate from bowel cancer have been reduced by 16% by regular screening for the disease. Five year survival rates are 83% if the disease is caught in the early stages and there is now a simple test which people can conduct at home which will detect 2/3rds of cases. From November last year everyone in Scotland between the age of 50 and 74 will be sent a screening test through the post every two years. Within a fortnight of returning the kit people will be informed of the results. 2% of people will need further investigation but of these only 10% will prove positive. Because the test misses some cases it is important that it is not seen as replacing the need to consult your GP if any symptoms occur. Further details can be found on www.bowelscreening.scot.nhs.uk.
