Trekkies for Charityby Caroline Dobson - 12:44 on 22 June 2009
In September 2008 Rtns Henry Dow and Roy Mclennan,RC Loch Ness, went on a trek through the Stok La Pass, Nepal, in aid of Maggies, Highland. On June 10th they gave an illustrated talk to the club about their experiences. The photo shows them standing at the summit of the walk.
After the shock of their first sight of Delhi, they felt unruffled by the sound of gunfire from the Pakistan border while they stayed in Leh, capital of Ladakh. They were there to acclimatise to the altitude before setting off up the mountain with 30 trekkers,2 doctors, 2 guides, 70 horses and many porters , as well as the all important( and excellent) cook. Their photos of the town of Leh and the early stages of the trail were a travel agent’s delight; but later photos of the walkers toiling up to the summit ( and of the camp toilets) made it clear that this was no package holiday and that they had worked hard for their sponsor money . The nine and a half hours they spent on a bus between Delhi and Agra at the end of the trip struck many of us as more terrifying than the climb, given the pictures of the traffic conditions!
The trip raised almost £14,000 for Maggie’s Highland, including support from our own Club and RCs Nairn, Elgin, Aberfeldy, Inverness, Alford and Pitlochry.
