As a member of the Loch Ness Club for 20 years, Mr Norrie has also held a number of key roles in other organisations throughout the Highlands such as past President of the Inverness Junior Chamber, professionally as a member of the Scottish Council for Development & Industry as well as locally on the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and a Committee member in the local Sea Cadets. Having recently celebrated his 60th birthday it made him all the more determined to maintain his personal fitness as Norrie lists his interests as hill-walking (bagging six Munros in one day), cycling, curling and indoor football. The Granddad to three young grandsons was very proud to have been in the company of ‘Royalty’ recently when he completed his 22nd consecutive Highland Cross alongside Pippa Middleton, the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Speaking about his most recent appointment, the new Club head said, “I am extremely grateful to the members of the Club for allowing me to hold the President’s chain for the next year. I promise I will do all I can to make sure that I continue the fantastic work already undertaken by my predecessors. “As one of the longest members in the Club I have held a number of positions over the years in various committees assisting in projects for youth in the community as well as fundraising for local, national and international causes. The new President went on, “In this year, we will continue to focus on helping local groups and organisations by giving away £300 every month until the end of 2011 to help with their operating costs. “The project known as our ‘Charter Charities’ was set up in celebration of our Club’s 20th Anniversary last year and it has proved extremely popular with smaller groups and Club where a few hundred pounds makes a massive difference to them. “We will also continue to help our world-wide Rotary challenge to match the $250 million put up by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in an attempt to finally eradicate Polio throughout the world. Norrie concluded, “In essence I look forward to the year ahead and hope that as custodian of this office for the next 12 months, I can continue to develop and enhance the position that the Rotary Club of Loch Ness has in the local community. Alistair Norrie will be assisted in his executive team by Caroline Dobson as Senior Vice President and James Martin, Junior Vice President of the Club. Caroline Dobson will become the Club’s first ever female president when she takes over in July 2012.
